THE YOUNG ATHLETES WERE STRONGLY AFFECTED BY THE SITUATION IN THE UKRAINE
“Today half the world is helping Ukraine, but in those early days we were the only ones – and the Ukrainians remember that we didn't wait a single second and moved to help when it was needed most. In total, 15 lorries with aid left Dębica.”
Dębica residents started organising aid in the very first hours after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“During this first collection, we managed to collect a full truckload of food, as well as around 300 carts, which we transported directly to the Przemyśl train station. I wanted to deliver these carts as soon as possible, because I knew how many people were waiting for them. The residents of Dębica responded brilliantly to the appeal for help,” says Mariusz Szewczyk.
“Twice a day the swimmers trained at the swimming pool, which they reached for free by public transport. They also had access to the gym and the sports hall. They were looked after by coach Kacper Fara. During their stay, we arranged various excursions, including to Kraków and Łańcut. The Ukrainian athletes also took part in local swimming championships and in the St John Paul II Memorial, organised on the anniversary of the Pope's death in Pustków-Osiedle, as well as in a bicycle rally – for which the local residents borrowed them equipment. The parish priest Bogusław Czech from Straszęcin, who involved the parish in relief efforts, also showed his kind heart. The Ukrainian coach said that he would never forget how we took care of his group that they could just live and swim with us,” adds the mayor of Dębica.
