SUPPORT FROM POLISH SPORTS ASSOCIATIONS
As the Polish Wrestling Association, we acted immediately after the outbreak of war. We accepted athletes.
The sports associations in Poland acted quickly and initiated extensive support for the athletes from Ukraine.
“As the Polish Wrestling Association, we acted immediately after the outbreak of war. We sent a letter to the Ukrainian association offering extensive support. We welcomed the athletes together with their relatives. We showed that as athletes we are one wrestling family,” says Andrzej Supron, 1980 Olympic wrestling vice-champion and President of the Polish Wrestling Federation.
“Extensive support has come from many sports groups”. The Ukrainian players were accommodated by the Polish Athletic Association. Then, thanks to the federation, they went to Portugal to compete. The Polish Ski Association took care of a group of nearly 100 teenagers from Ukraine. The Polish Football Association expressed its willingness to organise a training camp and matches for the Ukrainian national team at its own expense, and co-organised the "Polish Football for Ukraine" campaign. The Polish Fencing Association, after the outbreak of war, contacted the Ukrainian Minister of Sport and declared its support ( for example, Ukrainian national team members were welcomed in Poland). The Polish Boxing Association organised, for example, transport for athletes from Lviv who were travelling to Croatia for a championship tournament. Ukrainian athletes also found accommodation and training opportunities in Poland thanks to, for example, the Polish Speed Skating Association, the Polish Roller Sports Association and the Polish Tennis Association.
