SPORT KNOWS NO LIMITS
AZS Lublin members have been involved in aid campaigns since the first days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At first, the support consisted of providing what was most needed: transporting people from the border, organising food, dividing parcels and distributing them. Later, the time also came for action in the sporting area.
“The idea of the Lublin Peace Relay was born,” says Marcin Kotowoda, secretary of the Management Board of the AZS Lublin Community Organisation. The beauty of this project was, on the one hand, that it was another brick added to support Ukraine and people fleeing war, and, on the other hand, that in such a short time the whole Lublin sports community united around one idea. Animosities between the clubs disappeared – everyone was involved in an action that produced tangible results.
AZS also decided to implement the UNICEF programme “Sport beyond borders”. “As part of this initiative, we conducted sports integration activities for Polish and Ukrainian teenagers in 22 schools in Lublin,” explains the secretary. “The competitions wrapping up the campaign allowed me to see that the differences between Polish and Ukrainian children had been eliminated. Nationality did not matter,” the youngsters integrated with each other, made friends and all had a great time while competing.
